First of all, on the positive side. The faces and figures are beautifully drawn, and the details are lovely--the flowers, room settings, and so on. Two copies of each picture means you can experiment or just use two color paths, a great idea. Another great idea is the black backing. Each page is not only single sided, but there's a black backing that should help with colors bleeding through.I was really prepared to enjoy this, but... The gowns and men's clothing throughout have almost nothing to do with the Regency era in which the novel is set. We have characters in gowns that are all over the timeline from mid or even early Eighteenth Century, through Victorian ladies, and on into Gibson Girls, early Downton Abbey ladies, and even (I think) a 1920's flapper or two. It was quite jarring to see Elizabeth dressed in what looked for all the world like an 1880's Wild West dance hall girl's onstage costume. The crucial interview between Lady Catherine and Elizabeth places Lady Catherine in a post (U.S.) Civil War bustle dress while Elizabeth sits beside her in a dress of flapper cut--straight from the shoulder with no shape at all. There are a few Regency gowns in there, but not many. Even if you derive your ideas from the 2005 film version, which set the story in the late 18th Century, you're not going to come up with most of these costumes. The gentlemen get equally bad treatment, again ranging from the dandies of the mid Eighteenth Century onward. And no man ever wore a ruffle like that portrayed on the cover of the book.I can't help feeling that an hour spent browsing the Web for the lovely, authentic costumes of the period in which the book is set would have paid off dividends. As it is, I'll probably save it for my granddaughter, who is too young to have read the novel but who loves to color pretty ladies.
